  1. One thing I really like about Stewart is he is unabashedly physically affectionate with his friends publicly. It was ingrained into me at a young age that physical affection by men is exclusively a private, sexual matter. I still haven’t become comfortable with touching or being touched by others but it’s nice that the world has prominent examples of people who don’t buy into it now. Life in a touch starved world is painful.

  2. fun fact – stewart was a bit of a curmudgeon on tng, frequently rankled by the laid back attitude of his costars, especially william frakes. i like to imagine lavar was the peacemaker on the set.

  3. When I was a kid I used to think it was cool that LeVar Burton did Star Trek in addition to his responsibilities at Reading Rainbow, like it was a hobby or something…

  4. Captain Jean Luc Xavier was part Betazoid, but it could only work while physically touching heads, to increase brain proximities.

Pictured here is the captain receiving a telepathic engine report from his Chief Engineer Geordie “The Rainbow” LaForge.

  5. They both aged so well!

These two guys were such an important part of my childhood, and the characters and shows they played really helped me in developing values I still hold to this day.

I really hope the kids of today have equally awesome folks in their media. I don’t keep up with all that, but I’m interested to see who their LaVar Burtons and Patrick Stewarts are.

  6. This is gonna get lost in the comments, but I got to meet Levar Burton one time. I had recently moved to LA and so it was still pretty crazy to me to see well known celebrities…it still honestly kind of is 10 years later but now a lot more used to it…anyway.

I was working at a small bakery and was in the midst of opening up the store during the morning shift and this guy comes in. It was like 7:05 in the morning, I’m not fully awake myself at the time and usually nobody showed up unless it was a regular getting a cup of coffee. Anyway this guy asks me what kind of quiche we had.

So I pull out our quiche, which changed from day to day, and start going over all of the different flavors, you know broccoli and cheddar, bacon provolone…and I look up briefly…and I’m like Troy Barnes in Community…I realized mid sentence I’m talking to Levar Burton and I tried not to stumble going over the last few flavors. I heated up one of them, and he was super friendly, and polite and hung out for a minute.

Made my day, he’s a good guy. Same can’t be said for every celebrity that came in, but Levar was genuine and friendly.
